If you happen to see a single red light flashing, this probably means that your console is experiencing problems with the scaler chip. What's the scaler chip I hear you ask? This is responsible for dealing with the display processing through the AV cable. If this is the case, you probably need to send the Xbox 360 back to Microsoft for repair if it's still under warranty. It's only a minor problem and can be sorted out quite quickly. If your console isn't under warranty, then sending it back is going to cost a great deal of money. If you find yourself in this situation I may have the answer at the bottom of this article.

Believe it or not, dust can also prevent the heat to dissipate as it clogs the air vents.
If you've got your Xbox within a hifi unit or cabinet, it may be a good idea to play with your xbox outside the cabinet. It probably isn't a pretty sight with all of those wires hanging out the back, but it will keep your xbox cool and possibly prevent it from overheating. The last ones are The Dreaded 3 and 4 Red Light Errors
